After recording an increase in driving offences in the canton of Vaud last month, officers will increase the use of speed radar checks.
The effects of road safety campaigns are on the wane in the canton of Vaud. Police ran a series of speed checks on several roads in the canton during the weekend of April 27 and 28 and the results are alarming. Close to 12 per cent of drivers were exceeding the speed limit, compared with an average of 4.5 per cent in 2006, police said.
Many drivers treat the road like a "motor-racing circuit,” said Jean-Christophe Sauterel, cantonal police spokesman. During the recent checks, five reckless drivers, including four motorcyclists, had their driving licenses withdrawn on the spot. Another motorist was caught driving at 144 kilometers an hour in a 80 km/hour zone.
The mild weather at the time of the checks is one of the reasons to explain the rise of the driving offences. Vaud police plan to increase the use of speed radar checks on several mountain roads and “critical spots” during the bank holidays in May.
